How House Pests Affect Your Health

Nov 16, 2020 | Home Pest Tips

It’s a pretty well-known fact that creepy crawlers and other critters can be fairly icky, and these pesky pests are not really welcomed into our homes with open arms. However, a lesser-known fact is that on top of being just all around gross, most pests can actually affect your health as well! There are different health risks associated with every pest, so let’s dive in and see what they may be doing!

Cockroaches

These particular pests have a rapid rate of reproduction, and a few roaches can quickly turn into an infestation. Cockroaches shed their skins regularly, as well as leaving droppings and urine everywhere they go. These lovely little presents become airborne allergens, which are particularly problems for people with asthma, or who are otherwise more susceptible to allergies, such as children or elderly. Because of their small size, they are also able to gain access to areas that you might deem sealed off, and can contaminate surfaces like counters and cabinets.

Rodents

Rats and mice may be considered the cutest of these creepy crawlers, however, they pose a serious health risk for many reasons. Rodents are known to carry more than 35 different diseases. These are mostly transported in their droppings, and can contaminate food and water sources. They also can travel through pathogens in the air that we then breathe in.

Bed Bugs

Though bed bugs may not be a direct health threat by means of transmitting diseases, they can cause allergic reactions with their bites. On top of this, however, they have been known to cause mental health issues for those inflicted with bed bug infestations. Bed bugs disturb the quality of sleep that the affected people get, causing insomnia. This lack of sleep can lead to depression, social isolation, and stress. All of these factors can result in long term mental problems, that may even extend beyond the length of time that the infestation lasts.

Pigeons

You’ve probably heard it from us before, but pigeon poo is literally the worst. It has been known to carry over 60 diseases, all transmittable to humans, either by contamination or by airborne pathogens. In addition to affecting our health, pigeon droppings are acidic enough to break down even the toughest building materials. This can cause serious damage to homes and other structures, leading to a massive headache attempting to repair everything, and an additional load of stress that could be prevented.

Allergens

There are many other pests that can cause health concerns for you and your family. Any pest that enters your home can carry along allergens. In addition, their droppings can stimulate allergic reactions, as well as the shedding of their skin. All of this pollutes the air within your home, and can contaminate surfaces and food, causing several health issues.

Overall, pests are no good to have around. From their shedding skin and droppings, to the diseases that they can transmit, its best to be rid of them before they have a long term effect on your health.
