The Las Vegas desert is home to many kinds of amazing wildlife, including a variety of scorpions. These scorpions tend to stay in hiding or seek refuge from the extreme temperatures, and may find comfort in or around your home, creating a dangerous situation for you, your family, and your pets.
These particular pests can be especially scary to come across, and their stings can be painful to encounter. In young children and elderly adults, these stings can prove to be very threatening as well, as they are more susceptible to the venom. When it comes to scorpions, preventing the problem before it happens is the best way to stay safe.
Types of Scorpions
Though there are more species of scorpions elsewhere in the world, the most common ones that you’ll come across in Las Vegas can be narrowed down to these two:
Arizona Bark Scorpion
These are the most dangerous kind of scorpions in Las Vegas. They are most commonly found under tree bark, or in and around palm trees, and are the only climbing scorpions. Their venom is a neurotoxin that can stimulate allergic reactions, and cause numbness, fever, increased heart rate, restlessness, and more. Though these scorpions are small, they are dangerous.
Giant Desert Hairy Scorpion
These scorpions are much larger than the bark scorpions, however, their venom is much weaker. Their stings typically only cause swelling around the site, but if you are sensitive to insect bites and stings, you may still want to be cautious.
Preventing Scorpions
Eliminating common hiding places for scorpions is a good way to start with the prevention of coming into contact with them. Don’t leave shoes, boots, clothing, towels, or anything similar laying around outside. If you happen to leave these outdoors, be sure to check the insides of them and shake them out before bringing them inside or wearing them. Don’t go barefoot, and wear gloves when doing yard work.
